Current work program
There is always a lot to do!
The Purkersdorf Nature Park is constantly being further developed. Guided by the 4-pillar model of Austrian nature parks we implement innovative projects for nature protection, education, recreation and regional development.
Nature park concept 2025-2030
A significant part of our work for 2024 relates to the creation of a sustainable nature park concept for the next 5 years. We are planning several workshops involving key stakeholders and in close coordination with other protected areas, as well as two baseline surveys by external experts.
Efficient nature protection
Here, the focus is particularly on the protection and preservation of the natural habitat due to the increased user pressure of nature park guests and their behavior in the forest.
- We are planning to expand our existing deadwood hedges and create new locations, e.g. at the Sängerbrunnen fountain and at the main entrance to the nature park.
- In order to reduce cross-country walking and driving by Nature Park guests in the forest in the long term, we are renewing our visitor guidance system and will set up effective access restrictions at our Nature Park entrances at Kellerwiese and the Nature Park Center.
- We plan to specifically comb our forest and forest meadow areas and collect the plastic scattered by wind drifts or torrents. We will also inform the public about the correct disposal of (found) waste in the forest.
- We maintain our existing forest biotope and create new spawning areas to better protect the amphibians found in the nature park.
- We will define veteran trees on the site and in the existing stepping stone biotopes in order to provide a suitable habitat for many species that depend on old, dying wood, such as the Alpine longhorn beetle.
Deepening educational cooperation
The focus here is particularly on increasing the recognizability of the nature park, strengthening learning opportunities through educational programmes, and passing on the nature park vision.
- Continue the revision of the nature park design as a visible sign for the visitors.
- The nature park continues its educational mission for an interactive experience of nature and cooperation with educational partners during the 2021 season, taking into account the valid guidelines for the containment of the pandemic.
- The educational offer at different learning game areas of the nature park will be kept up to date.
Regional development
Our aim is to anchor the nature park as firmly as possible in the region:
- We would like to increase our dialogue with local producers and service providers to increase knowledge transfer.
- We want to increase the Nature Park's presence by building local alliances and establishing a Nature Park regulars' table for local associations and organisations.
- We plan to support the municipality of Purkersdorf as a model climate region (KEM) with the surrounding municipalities.
