Science meets schools
Students observe the influence of climate on plants
"Science meets school" is an initiative of the Science Department of the Province of Lower Austria in which 6 Lower Austrian nature parks are participating.
The aim is to give pupils the opportunity to directly experience and learn about the impact of climate change on nature.
In late autumn 2023, the nature park worked with pupils from the local nature park schools (special school, primary school and secondary school) to plant around 30 regional hedge plants along the road in front of the school (Schwarzhubergasse) and in the courtyard of the school campus.
Since spring 2024, the pupils have been regularly observing and documenting leaf growth and fall, flowering and fruit ripening, as well as measuring temperature, sunshine duration and precipitation. The research work on the hedge ("outside") is processed and analysed in class ("inside"). The project is carried out in co-operation with the company LACON.
The "Science meets school" project is funded by the Lower Austrian Science Department and the Lower Austrian Nature Parks Association.
