Scythe mowing and haymaking on the Feihlerhöhe
10. and 11.June 2022
If you have always wanted to be actively involved in nature conservation, you have come to the right place! Commitment creates a good feeling.
We say thank you!
In bright sunshine, the nature park team was active in Juni 2024, together with helpers in the meadow orchard. The participants were given an insight into the work with the scythe, could try it out for themselves and made a valuable contribution to the preservation and care of the meadow orchard.
Action for school classes
Almost 100 pupils of different ages got an insight into the diversity and importance of this meadow orchard (as one of many meagre meadows in the Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve), the traditional craft of scythe mowing and learned more about the life of bees and their importance for the meadow orchard.
Action for all
Every year, almost a dozen participants get involved in the maintenance work on the orchard meadow. Unfortunately, this special work day had to be canceled at short notice in 2024 due to a serious injury to landscape gardener Michaela Kriegl. However, it will take place again as planned in 2025.
The volunteers learn from the expert how to sharpen their scythes and perfect their posture. They then work together to mow a section of the meadow and try out how to use the scythe and pitchfork. Hay stands are also set up to dry the cut grass. After the work is done, there are refreshments and a wonderful view of Purkersdorf.
Participation is free of charge, but not for nothing! The day of action makes a valuable contribution to biodiversity by mowing the orchard meadow.
The next action day will take place at the beginning of June 2025
Details about the importance and history of the orchard can be found in the attached PDF.
